STATEMENT ON THE RECENT ATTEMPT TO HOLD THE GAY PRIDE PARADE IN KYIV
On Saturday, June 6 in Kyiv the activists of the LGBT movement, international human rights organizations, etc. made another attempt to hold a gay pride parade "The March of Equality" (the first semi-successful and quite a marginal attempt was made on May 25, 2013 under the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych and under protection of the special police unit "Berkut"

. Neither the secretly appointed venue of the march that has not been revealed until the last moment, nor the number of law enforcement officers that exceeded in several times the number of the action participants (appr. 300 people) did not prevent the failure of the event. The participants walked 500 meters along Obolon embankment, after which they had to interrupt the march due to the active resistance of other citizens who started throwing the smoke bombs into the crowd and demanded to stop the action. The opponents of the action, apart from the ordinary citizens, included "ultras," football hooligans and activists of the right-wing organizations. As a result of the clashes were injured several march participants and policemen (who initially refused to protect the action). Besides, were detained 30 opponents of the action the majority of whom have been already released thanks to the efforts of the MPs, activists of the civil organizations and advocates. The outcomes of the LGBT-march in Kyiv, as well as the public reaction that preceded it demonstrate that Ukrainian society as a part of Eastern European cultural space does not consider a primary goal of the Maidan revolution and the priority of current cultural, political and social endeavors of Ukrainian people meeting the formal standards of the European Union in the field of human rights and eurointegration for the following several reasons. Firstly, as the Mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klytchko remarked in the appeal to the organizers of the "March of Equality" a few days ago (in which he urged them to refuse from the idea to hold the march in Kyiv under the current conditions), there is no discrimination based on any of the grounds and everyone has a freedom in speech in Ukraine. Besides, he added that the LGBT rights are quite a controversial topic in Ukrainian society and reminded of the fact that all previous attempts to hold the gay pride parade in Kyiv even in peaceful time heavily polarized Ukrainian public and were accompanied with the heated debates and physical clashes. Today, went on to say the Mayor, such an event is especially untimely given that the main enemy of Ukrainian society is the Russian aggression in the east, and holding the events that are treated ambiguously by Ukrainian citizens under such circumstances means endangering public security in the capital and playing into the hands of the enemy propaganda. Accordingly, the "Azov" regiment considers the genuine provocateurs not the opponents of the "March of Equality" labeled in the left-liberal media as "far-right radicals," but the organizers of the event who elevated their particular interest over the social whole in such challenging for Ukraine times under the guise of defending the universal values. Moreover, it was disclosed that preparation for the LGBT-march and raising the public awareness regarding the respective problems at the request of the grant givers were conducted right on the eve of the action on a paid basis, which proves artificiality of these problems for Ukrainian society. In addition, commentaries of some LGBT activists in the social networks, according to which the successful gay pride march in Kyiv would undermine credibility of the claims about discrimination based on the gender and sexual identity in Ukraine (and the need to get further financial assistance of the international funds in order to improve the situation), create an impression that such provocation could be quite conscious. In this connection it should be noted that some LGBT activists also considered the idea to hold the march under the current conditions provocative and harmful. Secondly, it may be stated that both the "Azov" regiment and Ukrainian society as a whole believe that the rights should necessarily correspond with the duties, especially today, when the victory depends on active participation of each Ukrainian in the common struggle against the invaders. It's easy to observe that many LGBT-activists hold the individualistic anti-war position, care only about social recognition in the view of eurointegration as a presumable sole goal of Ukrainian society and do not contribute anyhow to the military confrontation in the east, with some minor exceptions. Back during the Maidan revolution nobody could see the LGBT banners at the forefront of the battle with the defenders of Yanukovych's anti-people regime - the riot police "Berkut" and hired thugs-"titushki," and the attempts of the LGBT-activists to wave their banners far behind the backs of the nationalists, who constituted the core of resistance and risked their health and lives for Ukraine, were decisively interrupted by the latter. Today, the claims of some LGBT-activists according to which the "right-wing radicals" are good only for attacking the peaceful march and are not "brave enough for the front" sound especially ungrateful and hypocritical given that the most devoted and motivated soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteer battalions are namely the nationalists, many of whom joined the "Heavenly Battalion" not for the sake of such "eurointegration." Not incidentally, the speaker of the General Staff of Ukraine Vladyslav Selezniov summarized an opinion of Ukrainians on the "March of Equality" when he promised its participants that they might receive the call-up letter to the army right during the gay pride parade. In other words, the General Staff showed that the right to be "equal" in a society should be deserved, and the best way for men to do it under the current conditions is to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine, not demand recognition for nothing. Last but not least, the "Azov" regiment supports the traditional family values and regards absolutely misleading the "fundamentalistic" and "reactionary" image of Ukrainian society that is created by the activists of the LGBT-community. Ukrainian society does not violate the privacy of individuals based on their sexual preferences, the sexual minorities have lots of special places for communication, therefore, the "Azov" regiment considers claims about discrimination provocative and false. Although it refused to answer this provocation, it's clear that it is against the "March of Equality" either, especially in the view of the promises to "bury" the "patriarchal and heterosexual order" that are championed by some activists of the LGBT-movement and definitely go beyond the field of "individual rights."
